How to Brush Like A Dentist
One of the biggest problems that I see on a daily basis is significant wear to the teeth due to heavy handed brushing habits. Scrubbing with force is not the key to clean and healthy teeth! Applying too much force while brushing actually causes abrasion to the teeth and can also lead to receding gums. In this post, I want to introduce the benefits of an electric toothbrush, specifically- my favorite brand Sonicare.
As described above, the wear on teeth due to abrasive brushing habits is a common occurrence. Brushing our teeth is a daily ritual that becomes such a habit that we perform it without much thought. This is where it becomes problematic, when a person brushes too hard it is very difficult to get them to break this habit. This is one of my biggest reasons for recommending a Sonicare electric toothbrush. By introducing a new type of brush (electric vs manual), it requires you to learn a completely new habit of brushing. One of the biggest advantages of the Sonicare brush is that it will alert you if you are applying too much force while brushing. You will hear an audible change in the noise the brush makes when applying excessive brushing force. The goal while using an electric toothbrush is to focus less on a brushing motion and more about guiding the toothbrush around your mouth to allow the brush to do the work.
Another benefit of a Sonicare toothbrush is the vibration frequency of the brush. The brush completes 31,000 brush strokes per minute. This is equivalent to a month's worth of manual brushing strokes in 2 minutes. This is improves access areas between teeth that are too tight for a toothbrush bristles to pass. One of the last benefits that I see in a Sonicare toothbrush is that it keeps patients accountable to brush for the appropriate amount of time. The recommended time to spend brushing is 2 minutes. Once the brush is turned on, it will stay on for 2 minutes and will make a small pausing vibration every 30 seconds. The 30 second intervals will help you learn to spend the correct amount of time in each area of your mouth. Once the 2 minutes has passed, the brush will automatically turn off.
